A Statement from CEO Janet V. Green:
Habitat for Humanity works to build homes, communities, and hope. Now more than ever, we must take a vigilant stand to build hope within our community, and throughout the country. Like many of you, the murder of George Floyd caused me to look deep within my heart to try to find the words to express my sadness, anger, and frustration. The systemic racism and racial disparities our country has perpetuated must come to an end. It is not only time to find our words and speak out against injustice, but to finally pass the microphone and provide a platform for the voiceless to speak.
Our Black and brown neighbors have fought through generations of adversity to become just that: our neighbors. From redlining to subprime loans, racial inequality within the U.S. housing system has historically placed an unnecessary and dangerous burden on people of color. That same inequity and burden are within the systems of employment, education, and healthcare. It is these centuries of unjust policy and systemic racism against communities of color that led to the deaths of George Floyd, Breonna Taylor, Ahmaud Arbery, and countless others. Enough is enough.
The fight for justice starts with each of us individually. We all have work to do. I personally commit to engaging in the vital anti-racist advocacy that must take place at every level of our government and in our society. While I cannot know the pain endured by my Black friends, colleagues, and neighbors, I can listen and I can learn. To quote Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr., “In the end, we will remember not the words of our enemies, but the silence of our friends.”
As a supporter of Habitat, I urge you to join me in fighting with our brothers and sisters of color to be a catalyst for change. There is much to be done and much we can do. We can only build hope if we build TOGETHER.
In love and solidarity,
Janet V. Green

Luke 15: 4-7 “What man among you having a hundred sheep and losing one of them does not leave the ninety-nine in the wilderness and go after the one which is lost until he finds it?” It is not that the ninety-nine doesn’t matter, but that the one needs our help. It is time to fight for justice and equitable access for all.
